A child’s year can feel enormous because it is packed with firsts: a classroom on September 1, a birthday party, a new bicycle, a broken arm, a snow day. Each one forces the brain to file away fresh details, and those details become the landmarks we later use to measure how long the year seemed. By contrast, an adult’s Tuesday often looks like Monday with a different email subject line. The clock has not changed; the record keeping has.
That difference between lived time and remembered time is the heart of the illusion. When psychologists ask people to judge how long an interval felt after it has passed, novelty matters a lot. A week that contains a wedding, a hospital visit, and a flight abroad usually feels longer in retrospect than a week spent repeating the same route, same lunch, same screens. The memory has more edges to hold on to.

Why routine gets shorter in memory
The brain is not a video camera. It is more like a selective editor, and routine footage gets trimmed aggressively because little of it seems worth storing in full. On a familiar commute, your attention is partly elsewhere: thinking about work, scanning for traffic, listening to a podcast. That means fewer distinct memory traces, and fewer traces produce a thinner sense of elapsed time when you look back.
This is why adults often feel that the past year “went fast” even if the days themselves dragged. A month of near-identical mornings becomes one compressed block in memory. The effect is especially strong when days blur together around fixed schedules, as happened for many people during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when home, work, and leisure collapsed into the same spaces and repeated the same cues. Why childhood seems stretched out
A seven-year-old’s summer is not objectively longer than a seventy-year-old’s, but it can leave a denser stack of memories. Children are constantly encountering new words, places, rules, and physical abilities, so the brain is busy tagging experiences as distinct. That makes later recall feel expansive, almost as if the period had more pages.
There is also a simple ratio effect. When you are 10, a single year is 10 percent of your life; when you are 50, it is 2 percent. That ratio helps explain why birthdays arrive with less drama as the numbers rise, but it does not fully account for the feeling that weeks accelerate. The stronger force is usually memory compression: the older life gets, the more days resemble one another, and the fewer memory markers remain to slow them down in hindsight.

Novel experiences act like spikes in the memory record. A trip to Kyoto, a new job, a child’s birth, or even learning a new route to work creates boundaries in the mind’s timeline. People can often tell you where they were when they started a new chapter because the chapter came with a name, a place, and a different daily script.
Routine does the opposite. It sands down the edges. When nothing stands out, the brain stores less, and the interval later feels smaller than the same amount of clock time spent doing unfamiliar things. That is why vacations can feel unusually long in memory even when they last only seven days, while a month of repetitive work can disappear behind a single vague summary: busy. The feeling is not mystical. It is bookkeeping.
How to slow it down without changing the clock
If time feels fast because memory is starving, the countermeasure is not to stare at a watch. It is to make more distinctions worth remembering. New streets, new skills, new conversations, and even deliberately changing the order of a familiar morning can increase the number of markers the brain has to store. A Wednesday that includes a new restaurant, a museum visit, or a first attempt at pottery will usually survive memory better than one more identical errand loop.
This does not mean every day must become a spectacle. The trick is to puncture routine often enough that weeks do not collapse into one another. Psychologists have long treated novelty as a major ingredient in retrospective time judgment, and everyday life keeps proving the point: when experience becomes repetitive, memory thins, and time seems to have sprinted away.
